In practice, you can rely on three main levels of protection.
If you do not take out specific insurance, only the limits set by international transport conventions (Convention CMR, Montreal, etc.) apply . These limits are calculated by weight (around €10 to €27 per kilo in 2024), which is far below the real value of most artworks. In case of damage or loss, compensation will be restricted to these capped amounts, and the carrier cannot be held liable beyond them.
If you already have a fine art policy covering transit, your insurer will step in according to your contract. Coverage usually applies to the full declared value of your objects, from nail to nail, but it is important to check exclusions in advance (packing, inherent vice, claim deadlines, etc.). In addition, your insurer must provide us with a waiver of liability, in accordance with our general terms and conditions of sale.

Another option is to subscribe to a fine art insurance policy through our specialized broker. You declare the value of your goods, and—subject to acceptance—the insurer covers that value . In the event of a claim, the broker evaluates the damage and makes the final decision on restoration or reimbursement.
| Coverage option | Compensation limit | Who intervenes | Value covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal liability only | Limited by international conventions (by weight, e.g. €10–27/kg) | The carrier (if liable) | Always capped, often symbolic |
| Own fine art insurance | According to your policy terms | Your own insurer | Declared/agreed value |
| Insurance via a broker | Declared value, subject to insurer acceptance | Specialized insurer/broker | Full insured value (restoration or reimbursement) |
Confusing a carrier’s legal liability with real insurance coverage is a costly mistake . Liability only sets a limited financial obligation under law, while insurance transfers the full financial risk to an insurer. If your object has significant value, fine art coverage remains the only way to ensure complete peace of mind.
As an art logistics specialist, Embelco does not replace the insurer but ensures that your artworks are transported under the best possible conditions: museum-grade packing, secure storage, and full coordination of transport. Embelco can facilitate access to specialized fine art insurance through its trusted broker, but the choice always remains yours. The company’s role is to advise you, handle all practical aspects of transport, and give you the peace of mind that every step—from pick-up to installation—is managed with care and professionalism.
